Culling software for event photographers: what actually saves time
Most culling tools promise hours back and deliver minutes. The difference comes down to three features — and whether the tool understands groups or only single frames.
Culling tools are easy to demo and hard to evaluate. Every one of them looks fast on a folder of 200 images. The question is what happens at 4,000.
The three features that matter
Group detection. Does the tool understand that these forty frames are one moment? If it presents 4,000 individual decisions, it has automated nothing — you are still making 4,000 decisions, just in a nicer interface.
Per-face evaluation in group shots. A frame is not "sharp" or "not sharp" when there are twelve people in it. The useful question is which frame has the most faces working at once, and that requires evaluating each face separately. Tools that score the frame as a whole are useless for the group formals, which is exactly where culling hurts most.
Batch actions that follow the group. Once you have decided about a group, everything downstream — rating, colour label, an edit — should apply to the group. If you have to reselect, you have lost the benefit.
What does not matter as much as the marketing says
Raw speed of the analysis. Whether the scan takes four minutes or eleven is irrelevant. You start it and go do something else. Nobody watches a progress bar.
Overall "AI quality scores". A single number per image sounds useful and is not. You cannot tell why a frame scored 62, so you end up checking it, which is the work you were trying to avoid. Specific flags — blur, blink, duplicate — are actionable. A score is not.
How to actually test one
Do not test on a curated folder. Take one real wedding, unedited, all cards, and run it. Then check three things:
- How many of your genuine keepers did it reject? Any false rejection you find by accident means there are more you did not.
- In the group formals, did it pick the frame you would have picked?
- How long did the pass take end to end, including your review of its decisions? That last clause is where most of the claimed savings disappear.
A tool that gets you from 4,000 frames to 500 candidates, correctly, is worth real money. A tool that gets you from 4,000 to 2,000 has moved the work rather than removed it.
