How to cull 4,000 wedding photos in under an hour

A twelve-hour wedding produces thousands of frames and most of them are near-duplicates. Here is a culling pass that gets you to a shortlist without opening every file.

A twelve-hour wedding at 6 frames per second is not a creative problem. It is a sorting problem, and sorting is the part of the job nobody books you for.

Stop culling in passes of one

The most common mistake is opening the shoot in date order and judging each frame on its own. You end up re-deciding the same thing forty times, because the ceremony exit alone is forty near-identical frames.

Group first, judge second. Every burst you shot is one decision, not forty.

The three-question pass

For each group, ask only three things, in this order:

  1. Is anything technically broken? Motion blur, missed focus, a blown highlight you cannot recover. Reject and move on. Do not linger on a frame you already know is unusable.
  2. Is everyone's face working? In group shots this is the one that matters. One person mid-blink kills an otherwise perfect frame, and you will not notice it at thumbnail size.
  3. Is this different from the frame next to it? If two keepers say the same thing, keep the better one.

Anything that survives all three is a keeper. Everything else is gone.

Where the time actually goes

Question one and question two are mechanical. A machine can flag blur, closed eyes and duplicates far faster than you can, and it does not get bored at frame 3,000 the way you do at frame 300.

That is the whole argument for automated culling: not that software has better taste than you, but that it clears the mechanical rejects so your attention lands on question three, which is the only one that needs a photographer.

A realistic target

On a 4,000-frame wedding, expect roughly 60% to fall out on technical grounds and near-duplicates alone. You are choosing between 400 and 500 frames, not 4,000 — and that is an evening's work, not a week's.
